We conclude the Russo-Soviet film series with Kukuska (Cuckoo), a poignant film by Aleksandr Rogozhkin. As Finland's withdrawal from World War II draws ever closer, a tentative relationship between an abandoned Finnish soldier (Veikko) , a Lapp woman (Anni), and a Russian captain (Ivan) accused of anti-Soviet correspondence offers momentary solace to a trio of lost souls. A chained to a rock , Veikko managed to set himself free. Ivan, a captain of the Soviet Army, arrested by the Front Secret Police, has a narrow escape. They are soldiers of the two enemy armies. A Lapp woman Anni gives a shelter to both of them at her farm. For Anni they are not enemies, but just men. Steve Hunt will present the movie and will lead a discussion after the screening. 2002 103 min. PG-13
