Keynote: It's All About Persuasion...Surely You Agree!
by Susan Schlag
Think about it: most communications tasks - grant proposals, presentations, cover letters, job interviews, even teaching - are actually persuasive. Whether through the spoken or written word, the communicator seeks at some level to convince the audience of the message's value. The challenge, of course, is that the typical audience doesn't seek to be persuaded! That's why defining you audience and leading with their goal are so important. In this "keynote workshop," participants will gain hands-on experience using simple frameworks to profile and audience and organize content; and then create a communications plan to deliver desire results.

First Break-Out Session Descriptions
Session 1A Message in a Thimble: Compressing Words in a 2.0 World - Susan Schlag
Research has shown that today's audience is fragmented, distracted, and maddeningly mobile. So how do you get through to someone with the attention span of a gnat? It's difficult - and different - but definitely doable! Understanding today's readers' motivations and behaviors will help writers creat more effective nano-content, mobile content, social media content, and more. This session will ground participants in the basics of media consumption behavior and offer a handy checklist of dos and don'ts - along with a few compelling examples - for developing today's electronic content.
Session 1B Frontline Library Advocacy - J.C. Morgan
JC Morgan, Chair of the Kentucky Public Library Association's Advocacy Committee, will speak about "frontline advocacy". You don't have to visit the halls of your state or federal legislator to make your best advocates, your patrons, aware of the value of a library in your community.
Session 1C Pin Pictures with Pinterest - Lee Mauer
Learn about the cool social networking site Pinterest and how it can be a great tool to promote your library. Create pinboards for reading lists, book covers, local photos, made-at-the-library crafts, display ideas, and more. You can even make collaborative boards with patrons. This session will be presented by Leigh K. Mauer, Readers’ Advisory Librarian for the Kenton County Public Library.
Second Break-Out Session Descriptions
Session 2A Communicating with Facebook - Gina Holt
Facebook is an excellent tool to market your brand and communicate with patrons. Learn how to respond to ALL comments, manage your business page and keep it professional on the personal page. You will also receive tips on how to create a fan page policy, increase the number of fans and make the page engaging.
Gina Holt has worked as the public relations coordinator for the Kenton County Public Library for five years. She has found unique ways to promote Library services and programs, created and launched a social media plan and increased media coverage. In 2010, she presented a workshop on Using Social Media as a PR tool at the annual Kentucky Public Library Association Conference. With her leadership, the Library Facebook Fan page went from having 2,000 fans to over 6,000 in just a few weeks.
Session 2B Twitter 1.0 - Nathan Swartzendruber
Want to learn what Twitter is about? Want to use Twitter to collaborate and learn? This is a great session for first-time users and people who have given Twitter a try. In this session, you'll get a complete introduction to Twitter in three segments:
- Twitter Basics
- Using Twitter.com
- Learning on Twitter
In the first segment, I'll describe the way Twitter works with tweets, #hashtags, @mentions, and direct messages. Next, I'll show you how to use those features at Twitter's website (which is more difficult than it ought to be).
Session 2C Welcome Mat - Carissa Thatcher, Amy Werring and David Allen
The South campus Learning Resources Center (LRC) is your typical, everyday library…or is it? Join our staff as we transform ordinary objects into extraordinary displays, turning customer service into a customer experience!
