The Mercury 13: The Untold Story of the First Women Astronaut Trainees (Ongoing Event)

Event Type: Exhibit
Age Group(s): Adults
Date: 3/1/2019 - 3/30/2019
Description:
You’ve heard of Project Mercury and the men with the “right stuff.” But, do you know about the Mercury 13? During Women’s History Month, visit the Science & Technology Dept. (3rd floor of the Louis Stokes Wing) and learn about the thirteen women who were part of a privately-funded program to train female astronauts in the early 1960s. Although excluded from officially becoming astronauts, these First Lady Astronaut Trainees (FLATs), as they were called, were pioneers in integrating women into the space program. The exhibit is presented in collaboration with the International Women's Air & Space Museum at Burke Lakefront Airport.
